![]() ![]() After a series of talks and negotiations, an agreement between the water park and city officials set the stage for a newer, bigger Wild Rivers to come back to Irvine. In 2007, Great Park officials voted against setting aside land for the water park, but Wild Rivers advocates never gave up. The original water park was a favorite among locals, with wave pools, lazy rivers, and a variety of slides to offer a place to cool off during the warm summers. chose not to renew the lease for Wild Rivers past 2011. When Lion Country went bankrupt, they subleased the land to Wild Rivers, Camp Frasier (a youth summer camp, now Camp James), and Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. The park was located on land that was originally home to Lion Country Safari, a drive through zoo that opened in 1970 and closed in 1984. The popular Southern California water park was located in Irvine, operating for 25 years from 1986 to 2011. Construction on Wild Rivers began July 7, 2021. A V-notch weir is used to measure discharge and bedload transport samples can be collected by intercepting the flow as it spills from the end of the channel. The re-circulated sediment is reintroduced to the flow at the upstream end of the flume and is distributed across the width of the channel. ![]() Sediment that is transported downstream is re-circulated separately from the main flow using a vortex pump which pumps a water-sediment mixture through a 1.5 inch pipe at high velocity. Flow spills into a large downstream tank and is re-circulated to the upstream header tank through a 6 inch pipe with flow rates of up to 30 l/s. The flume has a straight, rectangular section, 11m long and 400mm wide and a variable bed slope up to 1 in 50. The flume was built specifically to investigate the transport of riverbed material under uniform flow conditions.
